Tennessee Volunteers Golf Accessories Even before Tennessee became a state the residents were quick to respond. "Overmountain" settlers volunteered during the Revolutionary War and were key factors in the battle of King's Mountain in October 1780. Tennessee's status as the "Volunteer State" was solidified when the US War Department called for volunteers in the War with Mexico. Moving quickly to meet their alotted quota of 2,800 recruits, state officials were overwhelmed by 30,000 volunteers. In 1902 the Atlanta Constitution used the term "Volunteers" to describe the football team when recounting a match between UT and Georgia Tech. The nickname did not become official until 1905. Given the state's rich military tradition and the pride of Tennesseans in their heritage, the name was a natural fit.
